HOME CARE OPTIONS. WHAT KIND OF CARE DO I NEED?

There is a whole range of different types of home care available from short term care due to a recent hospital stay to respite, 24-hour care or just companionship.   Below we explain the different types of home care we offer at PRN to help you decide what care package is right for you or loved one.

What is home care?

Home care is essentially a service offered by local councils or private agencies to individuals who need help with their day to day living but who want to stay living in their own homes.  Our customers can range from the elderly or disabled to those managing an illness and our visits can last from 30 minutes a day to 24 hrs.  If you are interested in receiving home care or arranging it for a family member before you decide it is wise to consider what sort of care you require.  In this article we will set out the different types of home care services that are available.

PERSONAL CARE

This is help with personal tasks on a daily basis for people who need help due to simply getting older, illness or disability.  A care worker will visit you on a daily basis and assist you with tasks such as getting dressed, washing, toileting, meal preparation or eating and drinking.  Personal care packages are bespoke and it is up to the individual what they want to include.

COMPANIONSHIP CARE

This type of care is ideal for older people who are lonely or at risk of being lonely.  They are still in good health and do not want to go into a care home or retirement village. They want to remain independent and live in their own home but just need companionship for their mental well-being. Many elderly people suffer with loneliness especially when they lose their partner. They find themselves grieving as well as feeling alone. Having someone to talk to and go on outings with can have a huge impact on their confidence and help them avoid depression.

DEMENTIA CARE

People suffering with Dementia need specialist care. Many people with early-onset dementia may feel that a care home is not the right environment for them This is where specially trained care workers will help the individual maintain a routine and social life and will also assist them with any personal tasks such as household tasks or personal hygiene tasks if required. People suffering with Dementia can often have challenging behaviour and get confused so the care workers will get to know each person as an individual and will know what situations in particular they struggle with in-order to best know how to help them.

RESPITE HOME CARE

Respite home care is to help people who care full time for a loved one and require some support or simply have a break. This type of care can be offered on a daily or weekly basis or just a few days at a time just to help the family member manage their commitments.  Respite care is delivered by experienced care workers who will be trained to help your loved one with any specific difficulties they may have. In addition, respite care can also be used for people who are leaving hospital and need some extra support while they recover. Respite care is for people of all ages who need support with their recovery.

LIVE IN CARE

Live in care is where a care worker will come to live in the home of person they are looking after.  This is ideal for people who need daily care and companionship or need 24 hr care.  Live in care allows you to stay in your own home and have someone there to help you maintain the house. It allows you to continue with your regular lifestyle however the only downside is you have less privacy and this type of care can be expensive. It is essential that your care worker is vetted and has an up-to-date DBS check for vulnerable adults.

NURSING CARE

This type of care is carried out by a registered nurse who will visit you at your home to perform medical tasks that require specific nurse training and experience.  This could be dressing wounds, giving injections and administering certain types of medication.  They can also provide care for surgical procedures, such as tracheostomies, stomas and catheters.  This type of care is for any ongoing medical issues or for people recently out of hospital who need medical support while they recover.
